Principal's Message - Mr Steve Thorne
Newsletter Week 5
Gracious and loving God, we ask you to be with us, to open our hearts, to open our eyes, to what you want to give us during these weeks of Lent.Give us freedom, anticipation, a sense of joy that we might use this wonderful season to prepare to celebrate your mysteries of the death and resurrection, gift of the spirit you offer us, with hearts and minds that are renewed, that are open and free.
We thank you, and ask you for all of these things, in the name of your son Jesus. Amen.
Shrove Tuesday - What does it mean?
Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which is the first day of Lent. It's a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. But there's more to Shrove Tuesday than pigging out on pancakes. The pancakes themselves are part of an ancient custom with deeply religious roots.
Penitence
Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them. When a person receives absolution for their sins, they are forgiven for them and released from the guilt and pain that they have caused them. In the Catholic or Orthodox context, the absolution is pronounced by a priest. This tradition is very old.
Shrove Tuesday celebrations
Shrove Tuesday is a day of celebration as well as penitence, because it's the last day before Lent. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Giving up foods: but not wasting them. In the old days there were many foods that observant Christians would not eat during Lent: foods such as meat and fish, fats, eggs, and milky foods. So that no food was wasted, families would have a feast on the shriving Tuesday, and eat up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent without going off.
The need to eat up the fats gave rise to the French name Mardi Gras; meaning fat Tuesday. Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour.

Covid Restrictions Update
Please refer to the Covid Letter sent earlier today outlining changes that will start to come into place from next week.
Safe Driving during busy times
Reminder to parents that it is illegal to cross an unbroken white line and travel up the wrong side of the road. This has occurred at times on Powell St which is highly dangerous. Fines will apply if witnessed by Police or Council Rangers. I would encourage parents to contact police especially if you have video footage or are able to capture a number plate.
Wet Weather Traffic
As highlighted yesterday, wet weather brings out a lot more traffic in and around the school. Please be patient and allow for additional time when travelling through any school zones between 2.30 and 3.30pm. Please also be conscious of local traffic especially residents who may be trying to exit driveways.
Hair Styles
Just a reminder that our school policy states that girls must have their hair tied back and boys should have an even cut that does not come over their collar. Hair should not be a distraction by constantly falling over the child’s face.
Personalised Planning (PP) Meetings
Mrs Vezinias has been in touch with relevant families whose child(ren) have a Personalised Plan. The purpose of these meetings, held at least twice per year, is to work together on setting realised goals for the students and to ensure they are being supported to achieve the best possible outcomes. These meetings will be held over the next couple of weeks.
P & F Volunteers Needed
The P & F only have another 5 meetings scheduled for 2022. These are currently being held in the school hall on Tuesday evening from 7pm to about 8.30pm. At each meeting, a Principal’s Report is tabled outlining significant events of changes that are happening at the school. It is also a chance for me to gain feedback or to test some initiatives to gain a parent’s viewpoint. The P & F also plan, organise and run fundraising events which ultimately puts resources back into the school - significant financial support in recent times from the P & F have resulted in Little Bank improvements, classroom readers, iPads, Stage 1 verandah seating as well as funding some ‘special’ days for students over the past two turbulent years.
The P & F are currently looking for two parents, or two teams of parents, who could fulfil the following roles. No experience is necessary, just the gift of your time. This is a great opportunity for new families to the school to become involved. If you would like to know more about these roles, or to nominate yourself, please contact Louise in the office.

Special Family Mass - the Sunday @ 10am
All families are invited to join in this special Mass. It is a great opportunity for children to see their friends after Mass and for parents to make new connections.
Blessing of the Backpacks / Family MassSunday, 27 Feb @ 10amFamily Masses were started at St Therese a number of years ago but Covid put a stop to them. Fr Duane is very keen to have these ‘special’ Masses start again each term. Students are asked to bring along their backpack and as part of the Mass, Fr Duane will call upon a special blessing to keep the children safe throughout the year and guide their learning. Some fun activities on the Big Bank will follow the Mass. |

PUBLIC HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
As per the Diocesan Directives (attached):
- Vaccination is encouraged but not mandatory
- Masks must be worn inside the church
- 4 square metre rule applies at this time
- No congregational singing at this time
- Strong hygiene practices will be maintained
- QR Registration
REGISTRATION PROCESS
There will be no pre-registration for Masses. That process was demanding in terms of admin hours, and we will need to ensure ready availability of digitized records at short notice to the government in case of a Covid case. All attending Mass will be asked to use the Service NSW QR Code at first, and if unable to do so, the monitors will sign you in using a parish QR code.
IF YOU ARE RELUCTANT TO ATTEND PUBLIC MASSES AT THIS TIME
We understand that some are concerned about attending public Mass during stage 2 as churches are among the only venues allowing "mixing" of vaccinated and unvaccinated. If you are concerned for this reason, please do not hesitate to contact us, and we will do our best to organize Communion to be brought to you at home. (All ministers attending your home will be double vaccinated.)
RECONCILIATION
Normal times for Reconciliation to resume from 5pm Saturday 23rd October, please refer to the weekly bulletin this Friday for the details. In addition, Fr Jerzy will be offering Reconciliation from Monday 25th October until Saturday 30th October after Mass as needed.
BAPTISMS
We are in the process of rescheduling baptisms that were postponed during lockdown. For any new requests please contact Kathy at the Parish Office (email: westwollongong@dow.org.au any time or call 4229 1074 on Tuesdays 9am-3pm).
God bless you all,
Fr Duane
