Principal's Message - Mr Steve Thorne
Newsletter Week 9
Second Sunday of Advent
5 December
After a chaotic year, there is comfort to be found when we pause to read, pray, and reflect over the course of the Advent season...a time when believers eagerly anticipate the celebration of Christ’s birth.
The second Sunday of Advent gives us the opportunity to prepare our hearts in faithful waiting, celebrate the birth of Jesus, and ready ourselves for his second coming.
It's a beautiful chance to reflect on the ways prophecy has been fulfilled and to ponder what the future (promised to us through prophecies) will bring.
A Prayer for Faith on the Second Sunday of Advent
Father, prepare our hearts to celebrate your birth joyfully! We thank you for faithfully doing what you promised long ago when you sent your Son to earth so that we might have the chance to become part of your family. Let the promise of your second coming inspire us to live with hope and purpose.
As we wait for your plan to unfold, give us the patience we need. Remind us of the peace we can access when we take time to still ourselves before you and remember that you are God. We thank you that you are both sovereign and gracious.
Help us to find rest in the midst of what feels like chaos in our world. Amen.
Staff Changes
As announced last night at the P&F meeting, there are a number of changes occurring for 2022.
- Kim Bradbury will be retiring at the end of this year
- George Galvin is unlikely to return to St Therese in 2022
- Sue McGoldrick will finish her temporary contract at the end of this year. Sue will still be available for casual and block work next year
- Sheridan Keane will also complete her contract at the end of this year. Sheridan has been successful in gaining another 12 month contract in the Sydney Diocese for 2022
- Jenny Jancetic, who has been on leave this year will take up a position at Good Samaritan, Fairy Meadow for next year. Jenny will have the right to return in 2023
- Ana De Quintal, who has been at St Clare’s, Narellan Vale this year, has accepted another 12 months there. She also has the right to return in 2022
- Anne-Marie Gilmore, who has been at St Columbkille’s, Corrimal this year, will return in 2022
- Rita Crofts, who has been at St Patrick’s, Port Kembla for two terms, will return next year
- We have a couple of part time positions currently advertised which we hope to fill by the end of next week.
Reports
Academic Reports for Semester 2 will be available on Compass next Wednesday afternoon. Due to the extended remote learning period, the Catholic Education Office, in conjunction with the necessary Government authorities, have devised a simplified version of the report. Achieving an A-E grade will not feature on these reports. Students participation and engagement will feature in the areas of Religious Education, English and Mathematics.
Congratulations Sally Farrar
After going through an audition process, Sally has been successful in gaining a place in the Queensland Ballet's Guest Academy Program in 2022. This prestigious academy was established as a unique training opportunity for elite ballet students living outside the Brisbane metropolitan area. This is an awesome opportunity for Sally - we are all very proud of your achievement!
Building Update
Hopefully we will be able to include a few photos next week as a few significant things happen. New concrete is close to being poured for a slab at the back entrance to the building as well as the new stairs to the basement. They are also close to pouring the concrete across the front of the basement. These pours will then allow for new doors being installed and the building being much closer to a lockup stage. Completion date will likely be towards the end of Term 1, 2022.
Local Government Elections - this Saturday
Reminder to parents that voting in the Local Government Elections this Saturday is compulsory. St Therese School Hall will be used as a Polling Booth, open between 8am and 6pm.
In Catholic schools, the goal of formation in right behaviour and respectful relationships occurs in a supportive community. Through examples of Christ-centred living, children can learn from their mistakes and build and restore relationships in a climate of safety, acceptance and reconciliation.
Here at St Therese School, every morning at the beginning of the school day, the school community gathers together for school prayer and messages. During these times, we create a rich and positive school culture. Our behaviour guidelines help to build this culture.
To work towards being Respectful, Responsible and Safe at all times, we have a weekly focus for the whole school. This week’s focus is on behaviour that makes playing on the Big Bank, fun and safe for all.

RE NEWS
This Friday, 3 December, we will be celebrating our Christmas Liturgy for the end of the year with Fr Duane. This will be celebrated with all students in attendance in the Back Playground (in case of wet weather, we will run the liturgy twice in the hall as we are restricted with numbers indoors). Unfortunately with Covid restrictions, our parent community will not be able to join us this year. All students are invited to wear Christmas mufti clothes on this day.
Next Thursday, 9 December, we will be celebrating a Thanksgiving Mass for our Year 6 students with Fr Duane. Once again, restrictions dictate that each student can only be accompanied by two others as this will take us to the limit the church can hold with the 2sqm rule. All adults attending must be double vaccinated.
St Vincent DePaul Christmas Hampers
St Vincent DePaul Chapter President for St Therese West Wollongong Louise Pilson, has passed on the committee’s huge “Thanks” for our wonderful response to our Winter Appeal (back in Term 2) as she was unable to officially come to the assembly at the end of Term 2. The food was gratefully accepted by the team.
This year we will be collecting items for Christmas Hampers to be donated to the St Vincent DePaul Society to give to the less fortunate in our community during this special holiday season.
Please see below some ideas for donations. Thank you for any and all donations that you make to our appeal especially during these difficult and uncertain times.
In gratitude,
Mrs Calvert

PARISH
Dear Parishioners,
As mentioned in my communication on Sunday, we begin public Masses this weekend, 23-24 October, with 6pm Saturday Vigil and 8am Sunday Mass at Unanderra, and 10am and 5pm Sunday Masses at West Wollongong, followed by usual weekday and weekend Mass timetable.
Having met with Immaculate Conception and St Therese (ICAST) PPCs last night, we have decided upon the following:
PUBLIC HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
As per the Diocesan Directives (attached):
- Vaccination is encouraged but not mandatory
- Masks must be worn inside the church
- 4 square metre rule applies at this time
- No congregational singing at this time
- Strong hygiene practices will be maintained
- QR Registration
REGISTRATION PROCESS
There will be no pre-registration for Masses. That process was demanding in terms of admin hours, and we will need to ensure ready availability of digitized records at short notice to the government in case of a Covid case. All attending Mass will be asked to use the Service NSW QR Code at first, and if unable to do so, the monitors will sign you in using a parish QR code.
IF YOU ARE RELUCTANT TO ATTEND PUBLIC MASSES AT THIS TIME
We understand that some are concerned about attending public Mass during stage 2 as churches are among the only venues allowing "mixing" of vaccinated and unvaccinated. If you are concerned for this reason, please do not hesitate to contact us, and we will do our best to organize Communion to be brought to you at home. (All ministers attending your home will be double vaccinated.)
RECONCILIATION
Normal times for Reconciliation to resume from 5pm Saturday 23rd October, please refer to the weekly bulletin this Friday for the details. In addition, Fr Jerzy will be offering Reconciliation from Monday 25th October until Saturday 30th October after Mass as needed.
BAPTISMS
We are in the process of rescheduling baptisms that were postponed during lockdown. For any new requests please contact Kathy at the Parish Office (email: westwollongong@dow.org.au any time or call 4229 1074 on Tuesdays 9am-3pm).
God bless you all,
Fr Duane
