PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - MR STEVE THORNE
Newsletter Week 5
Sorry Day and National
Reconciliation Week
Today, we join all people of these lands that we now call Australia, to celebrate Reconciliation Week. This is a time of learning about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, helping us to build a just and equal society together. This year’s theme is Bridging Now to Next which presents a challenge to everyone to build bridges, move forward and learn from the mistakes of the past so that we do not repeat them today. Doing this will benefit all Australians.
As the Reconciliation website says,
“Reconciliation is important, serious and challenging work. But it’s also inspiring and uplifting for all Australians and all generations as we look to make reconciliation the business of all of us.”
In every National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, may we continue to rise above the sadness of our past, to confront its legacies and together bring about continued success of the Reconciliation process.
God of Reconciliation,
You inspired Solomon to build your temple. Give us the courage to build a world of
justice, equality, compassion and peace for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
sisters and brothers.
Help us now more than ever to understand their hopes and aspirations so that we may
all live with dignity and pride in this great land.
Help us now more than ever to build bridges. We pray for your spirit to be upon us as
we work towards reconciliation, and entrust our efforts into your hands.
We make our prayer in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
Staff Changes
Mrs Freeman (4B) will be taking Parental Leave from the end of this term. Mrs Amy Runko will move from her Diverse Learning role onto Year 4 Blue for Semester 2. Amy has been doing an awesome job in the DLST field for the past 18 months but has missed the regular contact of having her own class.
Megan Johansson will be taking leave for Terms 3 & 4 this year. During this time, Megan will have the opportunity to reconnect with her children who are engaged in tertiary study in Sweden but also taking on a teaching position at an international school in Sweden. This experience will refine skills and refresh Megan for the EAL/D role she will return to here at St Therese in 2026.
Winter Uniform
All children should now be wearing their Winter uniform except for sports days. Children should be encouraged to wear the uniform correctly and show pride in their school.
Multicultural Mass - Sunday, 8 June @ 10am
This Mass has been a highlight in our parish calendar for a number of years now. We live in a very multicultural community with the school boasting over 40 different cultural backgrounds. This Mass, on the very relevant Feast of Pentecost, is an opportunity for all to come together and celebrate.
Kiss & Collect Name Signs
If you have lost, never received or need an additional, family name sign to display through Kiss & Collect (drive through student pick-up), please call or email the office.
Emailing Staff
Parents are reminded that all emails should be directed to the info@stwwdow.catholic.edu.au address as this is checked numerous times throughout the day. These emails can then be triaged and sent to the most appropriate staff member. Teachers rarely check emails during the day and important messages can be missed if not channelled through the office.
Year 6 Camp
Our Year 6 students recently enjoyed an exciting and enriching camp at The Tops Conference Centre in Stanwell Tops! This fantastic experience offered a unique opportunity to learn outside the classroom, forge strong friendships, and challenge themselves through activities like high ropes, archery, the giant swing, team-building games, and bushwalking. Beyond the fun, the camp focused on developing essential skills such as teamwork, resilience, leadership, and communication. Students embraced challenges, built camaraderie, learned valuable life lessons, and created lasting memories, returning with newfound confidence and many stories to share.
Attendance
Changes to the CEDoW Attendance Policy have been flagged a number of times this year. Essentially, unless children are sick, most other absences will be recorded as Not Approved. This isn’t to say students can’t have the leave but the emphasis is now on the fact that students should be at school every possible day that they can. An average attendance of above 90% is the goal for every child.
Celebrating Reading: National Simultaneous Storytime 2025!
On 21 May, 2025 our school participated in the 25th National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS), a wonderful annual event that celebrates the joy of reading! Across the country over 2 million other students in libraries, schools, preschools and homes all read the same Australian book at the same time. This year's book was "The Truck Cat," written by Deborah Frenkel and illustrated by Danny Snell. Classes from K-6 enjoyed listening to and discussing ‘The Truck Cat’ and many classes engaged in further activities following this NSS reading experience.
Write On Competition
WriteOn is an annual writing competition open to all NSW primary school students in Years 1-6.
This competition is a fantastic opportunity for your child to explore their creativity, develop their writing skills, and express their unique voice by creating an imaginative text (up to 500 words) inspired by a special stimulus quote.
This year's quote is: “Could they be changing?”
Students in Years 1-6 are welcome to submit an entry to this competition, with all entries due to classroom teachers or Mrs South by June 13th.
Mobile Phones / Smart Watches
Reminder that any students who brings a mobile phone or smartwatch to school needs to leave it in the office when they arrive on site and then collect it from the office at 2.45pm.
Minor Head Injuries
Further updates in Compass now allow for minor injuries to the head of a student be relayed to parents via SMS. These injuries are assessed as usual in the office and if deemed ‘minor’, an SMS will be sent. As usual, if deemed more significant, a parent will be contacted via a phone call. This process will free up a lot of time for office staff having to look up phone numbers and individually call parents. By minor injuries, we are looking at a soft ball bouncing on their head or lightly bumping a head on another child’s shoulder. If there is a significant bump on concrete or other hard surface, or head clash with another student, parents will always be contacted via phone.
