ACTING PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - MRS DIMITRA VEZINIAS
Newsletter Week 9
St Therese School Prayer
School Prayer: God, Our Father, you decided your Kingdom was for those who were humble. Help us to imitate the ways of St Therese and remember that ‘Love can do all things’. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen
Morning Offering: O God, my Father in Heaven. I offer you myself and all I do this day. Mary, my Mother, help me to love God and look after myself, and those around me, today. Amen.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
With only two weeks left of Term Two, I would like to thank all of our students for trying so hard with their learning and contributing positively to school life in so many ways. It is indeed a pleasure to stand up in front of the classes each day at the morning assembly and to say together our school prayer. It sums up our Mission Statement.
Our mission is to provide an educational environment that:
- Has Christ at the centre of all that we do
- Develops the whole learner
- Is safe, caring and collaborative
- Welcomes and inspires a diverse community of learners
Having recent Kindergarten 2024 interviews and visitors throughout our school, I am acutely aware of the wonderful reputation St Therese has throughout the local area and I am extremely proud of the dynamic school community we have created together: students, staff, parents and Parish. I thank everyone for their involvement and contributions.

Staffing Announcement
I wish to inform you of a staffing change that will commence from Term 3 2024.
Following an extensive recruitment process, Miss Stephanie Shalala is the successful applicant for the Year 1 permanent classroom teaching position at St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School.
I take this opportunity to congratulate and thank Miss Shalala for all her hard work, dedication and contribution she has made during her time at St Therese. She will always be a valued member of our St Therese community.
The recruitment process will begin and a Kinder temporary teaching position will be advertised for Semester 2 2024.
End of Term 2 Liturgy and Awards Assembly
All Parents and Carers are welcome to attend our end of Term Liturgy led by Year 1 Gold at 10:30am in the Church. Following the liturgy, there will be a end of term morning tea in the Hall for all Parents and Carers at 10.50am. After the morning tea Parents and Carers are welcome to stay and attend our end of term Awards Assembly.
Please note after the assembly children will be dismissed from the assembly and if you would like to take your child home early you will need to sign them out with the classroom teacher from the classroom.
NAPLAN
Students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) during Term 1. A NAPLAN individual student report will be provided for your child early in Term 3. The same report format is used for every student in Australia.
NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards. There is a standard for each assessment area at each year level. Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. Student achievement is shown against 4 levels of proficiency:
- Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
If your child participated in 2024 and does not receive a report by Friday 2 August, contact the school office.
Annual Improvement Goal (AIP)
All Catholic schools in the Diocese of Wollongong are working with a revised School Improvement Framework that is linked to the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong’s Lighting the Way 23+ Strategic Plan. This year the staff of St Therese are focusing on one improvement goal as part of our strategic intent for 2024. The annual improvement goal is — All students will demonstrate personal learning growth in the areas of Mathematics and Reading.

Assemblies will be in the hall commencing at 2.10pm. Parents are welcome to attend any of these assemblies.

NCCD
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on Students with Disability (NCCD).
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data onSchool Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to provide de-identified information, already available in the school, about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines.
OUR BADGE
Our badge shows Saint Therese holding a crucifix and flowers, encircled by the brown of the Carmelite order. Therese loved flowers and saw herself as the ‘Little flower of Jesus,’ who gave glory to God by just being her beautiful little self among all the other flowers in God's garden. Therese said, “My mission - to make God loved - will begin after my death." "I will spend my heaven doing good on earth. I will let fall a shower of roses." Roses have been described and experienced as St Therese's signature in times of intercession. The crucifix is significant because Therese wanted to save the souls of poor sinners with Jesus on the Cross.
OUR CHARISM
Welcome & hospitality, joy & kindness reflect the spirit of our patron saint ~ St Therese, our founders ~ the Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict and the school’s focus on kind thoughts, words and actions.
Students Keeping Safe in the Digital World
As we are aware many of our students are immersed in the digital world, it is important to support our students to learn the skills to keep themselves safe online and the importance of safe and positive digital use and citizenship. Parents play an important role in teaching these skills. Recently the Premier called a state summit to assess the effects of social media on children and teens. Chris Minns says that he's concerned about the harm apps like Instagram and TikTok are causing. The summit is in response to calls to ban children under sixteen from accessing social media.
Here are a few simple tips parents can put into place.
Set limits and encourage playtime. Media use, like all other activities, should have reasonable limits. Unstructured and offline play stimulates creativity. Try and make unplugged playtime a part of your child's day.
Screen time shouldn't always be alone time. Co-view, co-play, and co-engage with your children when they are using screens—it encourages social interactions, bonding, and learning. Play a video game with your child. It's a good way to demonstrate good sportsmanship and gaming etiquette. Watch a show with them; you will have the opportunity to introduce and share your own life experiences and perspectives—and guidance.
Understanding the Apps your child is using. Common Sense Media is an excellent site for reviews about age-appropriate apps, games, and programs to guide you in making the best choices for your child. The Carly Ryan Foundation also helps unpack various apps- this week's feature app for our newsletter is YOUTUBE.
The recommended age for YouTube browsing is 13+.
YouTube can be utilised by teachers for carefully selected videos that support the understanding of certain educational outcomes.
It is important to remember there are many factors to consider when determining if a child should be allowed to use an app. The age restrictions are guides on the minimum age a child should be exposed to the content of the app. There are many other factors that need to be considered such as the chat functions. See some tips listed below.
Consider setting a family contract to help children understand their responsibilities when going online.

Zones of Regulation
This year students have been learning how to identify and name their emotions. Students have been working toward the following success criteria each day:
- I can identify what emotion I am feeling
- I can identify if my body and mind are ready to learn and can follow the school rules
- I can show my teacher that I am ready to learn because I am following the school rules.
How parents can continue this learning at home:
- Throughout the day, prompt your child to check in with their body and name the emotion they are feeling. Speak with your child about what that emotion feels like in their bodies.
- When watching TV, speak about what emotion you think the characters are feeling and list reasons why. For example, I can see that Bluey is feeling sad because her shoulders are slumped and she is trying not to look Bingo in the eye.
- Discuss what feeling ‘good’ (children may refer to this as being in the Green Zone) looks like, feels like and sounds like. Throughout the day, notice when they are in the Green Zone and bring this to your child’s attention. For example, I can tell you are in the Green Zone after you play soccer because you are smiling and your body is relaxed.
- Point out and celebrate your child’s strengths
Parent-School Partnership Framework
“We must take note of the changes that have affected both the family and the school, and renew the commitment to constructive collaboration – for the benefit of children and young people” — Pope Francis
Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) strives to create vibrant Catholic communities of faith and learning and believes this is best achieved when there is a genuine partnership between home and school.
The Lighting the Way Together Parent-School Partnership Framework has been developed to support the creation and maintenance of this partnership. It outlines for parents* and school the principles and expectations of the parent-school partnership so that together we can create:
- identifiably Catholic communities, inspired by the person and teaching of Jesus Christ, where all strive to act with hope, integrity, justice and compassion; and
- effective schools which enhance student learning and wellbeing.
The Parent-School Partnership Framework is available in six additional languages to help support you and your family.
The Framework is available in Vietnamese, Hindi, Nepali, Malayalam, Tagalog and Arabic. They are all available for download from the below link:
