ACTING PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - MRS DIMITRA VEZINIAS
Newsletter Week 8
Refugee Week
Dera Parents and Carers,
This coming Sunday June 16 marks the beginning of Refugee Week. Australia joins with the world in celebrating Refugee Week, this year culminating in World Refugee Day on Sunday June 23. Refugee Week is Australia’s peak annual activity to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and to celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. During this week, we are all asked to reflect on and, if possible, contribute to creating a ‘better understanding between different communities and to encourage successful integration enabling refugees to live in safety and to continue making a valuable contribution to Australia.’ This year, as we celebrate ‘Finding Freedom’, we continue to celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. Teachers will be exploring the stories of refugees and acknowledging and celebrating the diversity of our wonderful country. May we as a Catholic community continue to be accepting of all people whatever their cultural or social background, whatever their faith tradition, because that is what makes St Therese a community that cares.

Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Sunday, 16 June
Jesus had “heart” but, more importantly, He had a heart. The word “heart” is synonymous with grit, soul, intuition, love, strength, generosity, and, in its most total sense, the very centre of humanity. This feast embraces all of those meanings. Christ’s Sacred Heart teaches us that God loves us as a friend loves a friend, as a parent loves a child, or as a sibling loves his closest brother or sister. That is, Christ loves us in the same way as a person loves us, only more intensely.
Understanding God’s love should be as simple as recalling your little hand in your father’s big hand as you walked next to him at night as a little girl. It requires remembering running into your mother’s soft embrace, cheek to cheek, after skinning your knee. Jesus Christ’s love for us is as human and as clear as a beating heart.
Lord, you deserve all honour and praise,
because your love is perfect and your heart sublime.
My heart is filled to overflowing with gratitude
for the many blessings and graces you have bestowed upon
me and those whom I love.
Forever undeserving, may I always be attentive
and never take for granted the gifts of mercy and love
that flow so freely and generously from your Sacred Heart.
Amen.

Staff Changes
Mrs Kirra Calvert has decided to relinquish her role as Religious Education Coordinator (REC). Mrs Amy Runko will continue as Acting Religious Education Coordinator (REC) until the end of 2024. We thank Kirra for her dedication as REC and wish her all the best.
NAPLAN
Students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) during Term 1. A NAPLAN individual student report will be provided for your child early in Term 3. The same report format is used for every student in Australia.
NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards. There is a standard for each assessment area at each year level. Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. Student achievement is shown against 4 levels of proficiency:
- Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
If your child participated in 2024 and does not receive a report by Friday 2 August, contact the school office.
Annual Improvement Goal (AIP)
All Catholic schools in the Diocese of Wollongong are working with a revised School Improvement Framework that is linked to the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong’s Lighting the Way 23+ Strategic Plan. This year the staff of St Therese are focusing on one improvement goal as part of our strategic intent for 2024. The annual improvement goal is — All students will demonstrate personal learning growth in the areas of Mathematics and Reading.
Class Assemblies
Class assemblies are an opportunity for students to showcase some of the great things that are happening in their classroom for their parents and the other classes across the school. Some grades have opted to work together and will therefore present 2 assemblies over the course of the year. In other cases, classes will present alone which will be one assembly each. Assemblies will be in the hall commencing at 2.10pm. Parents are welcome to attend any of these assemblies. This term, class assemblies will be:
- Week 8 (Friday, 21 June) - Year 5 Gold

OUR GUIDING FOUNDATIONS
OUR HISTORY
The original Parish Priest, Fr John Mulheren, established St Therese Catholic Parish Primary School in 1939. The current Parish Priest is Fr Duane Fernandez. The Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict were invited to staff the school, initially in the church building. The first principal was Sr Juliana Madigan sgs. The first lay teacher was Miss Anna Warlow (now a Good Samaritan nun) in 1966. The first lay principal was Mrs Marie Debusch in 1978.
Students Keeping Safe in the Digital World
As we are aware many of our students are immersed in the digital world, it is important to support our students to learn the skills to keep themselves safe online and the importance of safe and positive digital use and citizenship. Parents play an important role in teaching these skills. Recently the Premier called a state summit to assess the effects of social media on children and teens. Chris Minns says that he's concerned about the harm apps like Instagram and TikTok are causing. The summit is in response to calls to ban children under sixteen from accessing social media.
Here are a few simple tips parents can put into place.
Set limits and encourage playtime. Media use, like all other activities, should have reasonable limits. Unstructured and offline play stimulates creativity. Try and make unplugged playtime a part of your child's day.
Screen time shouldn't always be alone time. Co-view, co-play, and co-engage with your children when they are using screens—it encourages social interactions, bonding, and learning. Play a video game with your child. It's a good way to demonstrate good sportsmanship and gaming etiquette. Watch a show with them; you will have the opportunity to introduce and share your own life experiences and perspectives—and guidance.
Understanding the Apps your child is using. Common Sense Media is an excellent site for reviews about age-appropriate apps, games, and programs to guide you in making the best choices for your child. The Carly Ryan Foundation also helps unpack various apps- this week's feature app for our newsletter is YOUTUBE.
It is important to remember there are many factors to consider when determining if a child should be allowed to use an app. The age restrictions are guides on the minimum age a child should be exposed to the content of the app. There are many other factors that need to be considered such as the chat functions. See some tips listed below.
Consider setting a family contract to help children understand their responsibilities when going online.
Helping Australians have safer experiences online
eSafety is Australia's independent regulator for online safety. We educate Australians about online safety risks and help to remove harmful content such as cyberbullying of children, adult cyber abuse and intimate images or videos shared without consent.
Find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites.
Parent Teacher Learning Meetings
During Week 9 all parents/carers are invited to meet their child’s teacher and discuss their learning. Students are invited to attend these meetings as the focus is on their learning successes so far and set goals for Semester 2. The meetings will be in your child’s classroom. If there is an appointment during the day, please come to the office.
As Ms Pellizzari is on leave, 1 Blue Parent Teacher Meetings will be in Term 3. Miss Turvey will continue to teach 1 Blue for the rest of the term.

Kinder 2025
In Week 9, letters of offer will be sent to prospective Kinders to join our St Therese School Community in 2025. While there is still 7 months before commencing, the excitement is obvious as the children come in for their interviews. While the official enrolment period is now complete, applications will still be accepted over the course of the year for Kinder next year or for any other grade for that matter.
Congratulations Annabelle & Georgia
They both performed their traditional contemporary dance choreographed by their owne teachers, than they participated in a series of masterclasses with the choreographer and judge. They learnt a contemporary dance through these master classes and were judged on their musicality, ability to learn the choreography (1min 20 secs and confidently perform this to theatre with a full audience) and ballet technique. As they were selected as finalists they were invited/ required to perform the contemporary dance they had learnt through dhe workshops on stage at the finals night.

Zones of Regulation
This year students have been learning how to identify and name their emotions. Students have been working toward the following success criteria each day:
- I can identify what emotion I am feeling
- I can identify if my body and mind are ready to learn and can follow the school rules
- I can show my teacher that I am ready to learn because I am following the school rules.
How parents can continue this learning at home:
- Throughout the day, prompt your child to check in with their body and name the emotion they are feeling. Speak with your child about what that emotion feels like in their bodies.
- When watching TV, speak about what emotion you think the characters are feeling and list reasons why. For example, I can see that Bluey is feeling sad because her shoulders are slumped and she is trying not to look Bingo in the eye.
- Discuss what feeling ‘good’ (children may refer to this as being in the Green Zone) looks like, feels like and sounds like. Throughout the day, notice when they are in the Green Zone and bring this to your child’s attention. For example, I can tell you are in the Green Zone after you play soccer because you are smiling and your body is relaxed.
- Point out and celebrate your child’s strengths
Parent-School Partnership Framework
“We must take note of the changes that have affected both the family and the school, and renew the commitment to constructive collaboration – for the benefit of children and young people” — Pope Francis
Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) strives to create vibrant Catholic communities of faith and learning and believes this is best achieved when there is a genuine partnership between home and school.
The Lighting the Way Together Parent-School Partnership Framework has been developed to support the creation and maintenance of this partnership. It outlines for parents* and school the principles and expectations of the parent-school partnership so that together we can create:
- identifiably Catholic communities, inspired by the person and teaching of Jesus Christ, where all strive to act with hope, integrity, justice and compassion; and
- effective schools which enhance student learning and wellbeing.
The Parent-School Partnership Framework is available in six additional languages to help support you and your family.
The Framework is available in Vietnamese, Hindi, Nepali, Malayalam, Tagalog and Arabic. They are all available for download from the below link:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/CARERS
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
‘Bump it up’ walls
To support student learning classes from Kinder to Year 6 have been developing Mathematics ‘bump it up’ walls that provide visual supports for students to self assess their work and understand ways they can improve. Students have been working across the school to co-construct success criteria with their teachers and to develop examples of responses at each level. Teachers have been supporting students to utilise the ‘bump it up’ walls to improve their work and respond to teacher feedback.
