PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - MR STEVE THORNE
Newsletter Week 7
Today we celebrated Kinder 2024 Orientation Day. This is always a beautiful day but one that conjures up an array of emotions for both parents and children. I thought it an apt time to reflect and offer a prayer for the hopes and dreams we all have for our children as they take steps to becoming less dependent on those they love and care for the most.
A Parent’s Prayer
(as a child starts school)
Dear Lord, we thank you for the depth of the love we have for our child. However, we find it hard to let them go, to trust them into another’s care. Yet we know that they are your child too, that your Holy Spirit goes before them, that you are encircling them daily.
Please help us to support and nurture their freedom, their independence and individuality. Please be with them to bring reassurance where there are nerves, to bring courage where there is anxiety, and joy where there is sadness. May their heart be free to enjoy learning and playing each day. Thank you for being with our family. We ask for your blessing on us all in this new season of our lives. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen
Genova Public Speaking
Last Friday, Genova was one of six Diocesan Public Speaking finalists who competed in Bowral. Genova was the third speaker, delivering her speech on the topic of ‘The Secret Life of Teachers’. Genova then had 3 more speeches to listen to before the nervous waiting period to hear the judges decision. After what seemed like forever, Genova was awarded SECOND PLACE!! What an awesome achievement and such a great skill to have moving into high school. We are all very proud of Genova’s achievements this year.
Year 6 Canberra
Last Friday, Year 6 and a number of staff attended a 16 hour day of learning about Federal Government, along with a fair bit of social interaction. The staff praised the behaviour of the majority of students with just a few reminders needed over the course of the day.
Swimming Carnival - Monday, 19 February
Save the date! With Summer fast approaching, parents are reminded that our school swimming carnival will be on Monday, 19 February. The next three months will be an ideal time for children to practise their skills or assess their own ability to see whether they are eligible to attend the carnival. Only students who are capable of swimming a full lap of Unanderra Pool (50m) will be invited to attend. Further details and nominations will be sent out during Week 1 of 2024.
Parent Survey
Thank you to the 66 families who have responded to the Parent Survey that will provide data for our Annual School Report (ASR). As this report only allows for generalisations that can be drawn from the data, I would like to share the actual results with parents. The horizontal scale goes from:
1 = Strongly Disagree through to 5 = Strongly Agree
General Comment (optional)
- We are very happy with our first year at st Therese, we have been welcomed with friendly faces, wonderful supportive staff and a fun learning environment
- Well Done!!
- We are big fans of the school, but think the school struggles at times with moving teachers / job sharing etc which impacts the ability to provide a cohesive educational path. Possibly some of our concerns are not from the school but from the curriculum as well. eg. times tables - will someone just drill that into the kids from K-2 and be done with it. It's a major cornerstone of math learning and the kids just don't know it.
- Both of my children and we as parents have thoroughly enjoyed the schooling experience at St Therese. The learning, social, sporting, and spiritual provision has been wonderful and such a positive experience of primary level learning has set the kids up for ongoing lifelong learning! Thank you!!
- A fantastic school & community!
- The school genuinely cares about my child and our families wellbeing.
- St Therese is a genuine faith filled community that provides excellent routines and known expectations for students. My child has had two outstanding teachers at St Therese namely, Gail Crane and Jazmin Tikkeros. Each of these teachers have surpassed expectations in terms of genuinely knowing, engaging with and understanding my child's needs. This was/has been achieved by providing relevant, consistent feedback and open dialogue in relation to my child. When necessary, Dimitra Vezinias has always made herself available for further collaboration and planning in relation to my child. In these instances, Dimitra has responded to concerns and followed appropriate processes and procedures to address them. My child currently feels safe, supported and known at school.
- In terms of support staff at St Therese, this is another area in which the school is truly outstanding. Classroom and non-classroom based support staff are friendly, approachable and will go out of their way to ensure the children in their care feel safe and supported. I will always be immensely grateful for the benefit my child received from literacy intervention in Kindergarten with Mrs Bradbury. Louise Locke is also always willing to assist and respond to enquiries in an efficient and friendly manner. It has been a privilege to be on the receiving end of all of this support, as well as witnessing this for others during the times I have visited the school.
- Being our first year at the school, my son has never been happier. So glad you accepted us warmly into your school. Thank you
- As a first time Kindergarten parent and teacher in another Catholic school I have been so pleased with our child's transition to St Therese. I find all the staff I interact with to be genuinely invested in the student's well being, learning and personal growth. I find the staff to be caring and the school community to be a welcoming and inclusive place. Whilst teaching and learning are most important, the interactions between the staff and students supersede this. Personally, our class teacher (Mrs Hogarth) has been professional, always open to communication and deeply knows our child's needs, strengths and interests.
- We receive a lot of information about the school and what is going on but minimal information on our children’s progress, only a few times a year. We feel that parent and teachers should be communicating more regularly.

Maths Games Information Session
Last Monday 13th November we held a Parent Information session about Place Value. During this session we had parents and grandparents attend a talk in the school library about Place Value learning. Place Value is an important concept in Mathematics and understanding Place Value is crucial for students' knowledge and skills across many content areas of Mathematics.
Place Value has been part of our Annual School Improvement Plan for 2023 and the staff have been working hard to create engaging and hands-on activities for students to develop their knowledge and skills. Parents were provided with information about how we teach Place Value, why it is important and how they can support this at home. A select group of students were asked to demonstrate some of the Place Value games we have been using in classrooms to the parents. We would like to thank all of the parents who attended the session and a big thank you to the students who came along to demonstrate the games.
Extended Leave (10 days or more)
