St Therese School Prayer
God, our Father,
You decided your kingdom
was for those who are humble.
Help us to imitate
the way of St Therese
and remember
‘Love Can Do All Things’.
We ask this
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to another exciting term at St Therese, West Wollongong. I hope you and your families had a wonderful holiday break. I thank you for having them so well prepared for the term ahead. Likewise, I would like to acknowledge the teaching staff who have been preparing learning programs over the holiday period to begin the term. It was wonderful seeing all of the smiling students return to our amazing school.
As we begin a new term, I hope to ensure that St Therese is a place where every individual can be their best. Please continue to maintain open communication as we work in partnership to ensure we support every individual’s faith, learning and wellbeing needs.
Welcome to all of our new families joining our school community in 2023. I look forward to getting to know each of you over the coming weeks. I hope St Therese becomes a place that feels like a second home where you all feel valued, heard and supported.
Building / Maintenance
During the holidays, I am thrilled to announce the following maintenance:
Painting K - 2 classrooms
Fixing of exterior and the floor in the Primary building
Air conditioning service in the entire school
Laying of synthetic grass on the Little bank
General maintenance - outside of our school building.
Year 6 Mass with Bishop Brian
Today, Bishop Brian celebrated Mass with our Year 6 students along with seven other Diocesan Primary Schools who came together at St Therese Catholic Parish Primary School. The annual Year 6 Mass with the Bishop is an opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist and remind students how they can foster their relationships with Jesus through compassionate actions and loving words as they grow. It was a very prayerful celebration of the Eucharist and our Year 6 students were very responsible, respectful and were mature when interacting with other Year 6 students from the eight Diocesan Primary Schools. Following the Mass, students were able to enjoy the opportunity to mingle, sing and dance together with students from the seven Primary schools present. They were also able to broaden their network of friends across the diocese during this time. I was incredibly proud of our Year 6 students who exhibited excellent leadership throughout the day. Thank you to Mrs Kirra Calvert, Mr Frank Timpano, Mrs Laura Miller and our St Therese Staff who supported our Year 6 students on this day.
Student attendance
As a school, we strive to meet our Diocese benchmark of 95% student attendance rates. We understand that there are a variety of factors that can have an impact on student attendance that are out of your control. Where possible, we encourage you to ensure that your children attend school unless there are circumstances that prevent them from doing so ( e.g. illness, family situations etc). A day here or there may not seem like a lot, but over time can have a significant impact on your child’s learning.
If you have planned leave that will span longer than 5 days, can I ask that you complete the Application for Extended Leave documentation that can be obtained from the school office. Please ensure that this documentation is provided at least 14 days before planned leave, with the exception of unpredictable circumstances. If you have any questions about planned leave please don’t hesitate to contact the school to organise a meeting.

NAIDOC Week 2023
From the 2nd to the 9th of July Australia celebrated NAIDOC Week. The theme for 2023 is "For Our Elders". This statement from their website recognises elders past, present and future.
Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones.
Our loved ones who pick us up in our low moments and celebrate us in our high ones. Who cook us a feed to comfort us and pull us into line, when we need them too. They guide our generations and pave the way for us to take the paths we can take today. Guidance, not only through generations of advocacy and activism, but in everyday life and how to place ourselves in the world.
We draw strength from their knowledge and experience, in everything from land management, cultural knowledge to justice and human rights. Across multiple sectors like health, education, the arts, politics and everything in between, they have set the many courses we follow.
The struggles of our Elders help to move us forward today. The equality we continue to fight for is found in their fight. Their tenacity and strength has carried the survival of our people. It is their influence and through their learnings that we must ensure that when it comes to future decision making for our people, there is nothing about us - without us. We pay our respects to the Elders we’ve lost and to those who continue fighting for us across all our Nations and we pay homage to them.
During NAIDOC, we remember the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of our country and celebrate their rich cultures and inspiring contributions to Australia.

NCCD Information
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disabilities.
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disabilities.

News on the Digital Curriculum
NESA has developed ‘Supporting your Child: Parent and carer guides’ in English and Mathematics for Early Stage 1 - Stage 3. These guides are now available on the Digital curriculum website and accessible through the Teaching resources tab.
The NSW Government student learning library
The NSW Student learning library is a suite of learning resources which are accessible for teachers, parents and carers, and students to be used in class or at home.
The resources are aligned with new syllabuses and have been quality assured by educational professionals within the department. The new resources will supplement and complement other resources being provided by the department, including units developed by department curriculum experts to support the roll-out of new syllabuses.
The library currently contains K-2 English and Mathematics learning resources. The remaining K-10 learning resources are to be released over the next 3-5 years aligned to the new NSW syllabus rollout.

Changes to English and Mathematics K-2 Curriculum
Curriculum is at the core of quality teaching and learning. It is important to communicate with parents, carers and the community about the teaching and learning that is happening in your school. This engagement will assist schools in identifying strategic directions, decide on improvement measures and assess their progress which can lead to improved learning outcomes for students.
What is curriculum?
The curriculum is a plan for learning based on mandated and approved syllabus documents and current departmental policies and procedures.
The NSW curriculum refers to the suite of resources that are the syllabuses and the support resources to support teachers to implement the syllabuses. This includes, but is not limited to, resources including teaching and learning advice, assessment resources, and syllabus-specific materials including scope and sequences, units of work, standards materials and work samples.
What is curriculum reform?
The NSW Curriculum Reform aims to strengthen and streamline what is taught in schools. The curriculum reform is an opportunity to engage and re energise what we teach and how we teach it. It focuses on making clear what is essential in the curriculum to give more time for deep learning, establish stronger foundations in English and mathematics, and provide stronger links between HSC subjects and career pathways.
English and Mathematics
In 2023 new Syllabus documents in English and Mathematics are being implemented in schools in Kindergarten through to Year 2.
The new syllabuses emphasise key concepts, identify essential knowledge and skills, and include new outcomes to clearly show what is essential. They remove ambiguity for all users. Clear and concise language in the outcomes and content help you to understand the learning expectations for building foundational skills in English and Mathematics. The new Digital Curriculum means the syllabuses will be easier to access and navigate, so users can find information more efficiently. Access content points are provided to indicate content that students with significant intellectual disability may access. Teaching samples and examples are easy to find and use. Teaching advice is a supporting guide that was refined through engagement and consultation activities with teachers.
CURRICULUM REFORM NEWS - PRIMARY
NESA 3-6 English and Mathematics Online Courses
NESA has released 3-6 English and Mathematics professional learning courses which provide teachers with an understanding of the syllabuses. Each of these self-paced courses is NESA Accredited 2.5 hours of professional development (PD).
It is recommended that all leaders and teachers engage in this professional learning during the Familiarisation Phase of implementation.
These syllabuses will be taught in all schools in 2024.
New English 3-6 and Mathematics 3-6 Professional learning courses are now available on the NESA learning hub.
This link is also available on the K-6 Curriculum Support site.
