PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - MR STEVE THORNE
This Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost. In the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2, we read the story of the Coming of the Holy Spirit where the Apostles received the precious gifts that enabled them to venture out, no longer fearful, to spread the Good News of the Gospel.
For us today, we are regularly challenged to acknowledge the presence of God in our lives. By calling on the gifts of the Spirit, we are better able to face these challenges and not become absorbed into the materialist world in which we live.
Sacrament of Confirmation
Students in Year 6 have been preparing to receive this sacrament on June 6. They will have their final retreat this Saturday at 2pm in the church. Please keep these students and their families in your prayers.
Afternoon Pick-Up
Once again, we are starting to receive complaints about traffic blocking driveways in Powell St & Woodlawn Ave prior to 2.50pm. Police have been notified and parents have been warned on many occasions not to arrive before 2.45pm when the gates are opened at the presbytery. Please be aware of our surrounding community.
Winter School Uniform
With Winter now well and truly making its presence felt, we will formally change into Winter uniform from next Monday, 29 May. The last few weeks have been a transition time but now we will all come back together with the one uniform. Sports uniform days will remain unchanged.
Athletics Carnival - Thank You
What a magnificent day we had for our Athletics Carnival on Monday! A huge thank you to the parents who were able to assist and to all the staff contribute in so many ways. We still have a couple of field events to complete at school and then the winning House will be announced along with the school squad to attend the next carnival.
Diocesan Cross Country
This event was held yesterday in Nowra. Congratulations to all the students who have taken up the challenge to represent our school in this sport. Special acknowledgement for Koa P in Year 4 Gold who finished first in the 10 year girls event - a remarkable achievement! Thank you to Miss Jazmin Tikkeros and Mrs Charlene Cameron who looked after our squad at the event.
Social Media
It was again fantastic to have so many parents / grandparents / friends present for the sporting events over the past two days. I would like to remind parents that it is illegal to post photos / videos of children, other than your own, on social media without the expressed permission of their parents. This is also the case for posting images of staff without their permission.
Da Vinci Decathlon
Two weeks ago, two teams represented St Therese at the Da Vinci Decathlon held at the Illawarra Christian School in Cordeaux Heights. The teams consisted of 8 students from Year 5 and 8 students from Year 6. Throughout the day, students break into smaller groups to complete challenges in 10 different categories:
English
Mathematics
Engineering
Art & Poetry
Creative Producers
Code Breaking
Cartography
Legacy
Ideation
Science
The day is very full on with very limited time to meet the requirements of each challenge. At the end of the day, we gained the following top 10 finishes:
Year 5 - 3rd in Creative Producers
Year 6 - 1st in Creative Producers
5th in Art & Poetry
7th in Art & Poetry
10th in English
Competing schools stretched from Nowra to Helensburgh and out to Penrith. Thank you to Mrs Carol Hiscox who worked with the teams each week from the beginning of the year to develop their skills and confidence. Another great achievement!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/CARERS
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Changes to English and Mathematics K-2 Curriculum
Curriculum is at the core of quality teaching and learning. It is important to communicate with parents, carers and the community about the teaching and learning that is happening in your school. This engagement will assist schools in identifying strategic directions, decide on improvement measures and assess their progress which can lead to improved learning outcomes for students.
What is curriculum?
The curriculum is a plan for learning based on mandated and approved syllabus documents and current departmental policies and procedures.
The NSW curriculum refers to the suite of resources that are the syllabuses and the support resources to support teachers to implement the syllabuses. This includes, but is not limited to, resources including teaching and learning advice, assessment resources, and syllabus-specific materials including scope and sequences, units of work, standards materials and work samples.
What is curriculum reform?
The NSW Curriculum Reform aims to strengthen and streamline what is taught in schools. The curriculum reform is an opportunity to engage and re energise what we teach and how we teach it. It focuses on making clear what is essential in the curriculum to give more time for deep learning, establish stronger foundations in English and mathematics, and provide stronger links between HSC subjects and career pathways.
English and Mathematics
In 2023 new Syllabus documents in English and Mathematics are being implemented in schools in Kindergarten through to Year 2.
The new syllabuses emphasise key concepts, identify essential knowledge and skills, and include new outcomes to clearly show what is essential. They remove ambiguity for all users. Clear and concise language in the outcomes and content help you to understand the learning expectations for building foundational skills in English and Mathematics. The new Digital Curriculum means the syllabuses will be easier to access and navigate, so users can find information more efficiently. Access content points are provided to indicate content that students with significant intellectual disability may access. Teaching samples and examples are easy to find and use. Teaching advice is a supporting guide that was refined through engagement and consultation activities with teachers.
Staff Planning Days
Extended Leave (10 days or more)
For extended leave for holidays, parents are asked to complete an ‘Application for Exemption from Attendance at School’ form. This is available from the office.
