PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - MR STEVE THORNE
Newsletter Week 3
FIFTH WEEK OF EASTER
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and everyone that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.” John 15:1–2
Lord, I pray that You prune away all my pride and selfishness. Purify me of my many sins so that I can turn to You in all things. And as I learn to rely upon You, may You begin to bear an abundance of good fruit in my life. Jesus, I trust in You.
Staff Development Day
Tuesday, 13 June will be a Pupil Free Day as staff focus on improving Numeracy across the school.
Mothers’ Day Stall - Thank you
Huge thank you to the mums who volunteered their time today to assist with the Mothers’ Day Stall today. This has also involved weeks of online shopping - which I hear isn’t such a chore after all!! As teachers, we are in the privileged position to see the reactions of students as they make their selection of a gift and often comment on how much their mum is going to be surprised and happy.
Mothers’ Day Reflection + Class Visit
At our morning assembly on Friday, Kindergarten will lead a prayer and reflection for our mums. At the conclusion of this, parents will be invited to visit classrooms for half an hour which will then be followed by a morning tea in the hall.
Da Vinci Decathlon
Today 16 students represent St Therese at the Da Vinci Decathlon being held at the Illawarra Christian School. This is an awesome experience where students complete in teams using critical thinking to resolve challenges in 10 different categories. Regardless of the outcome, I know the students will enjoy the challenge and experience.
Kinder 2024 Kinder Interviews
The majority of these interviews will be conducted this week. Although very time consuming, this is a time of the year that I look forward to. I like to ask existing parents about their experience at St Therese and for new families, I ask why they chose St Therese and how they have heard about us. Overwhelmingly, the new families respond that it is by word of mouth that influenced their decision. It is great to hear this positive feedback.
Congratulations
Last Friday, three students attended Winter sports trials in Canberra. Congratulations to Lewis McL (Year 6B) who was successful in gaining selection into the Mackillop Rugby League Team. Lewis will now travel to Wagga later this term for the State Rugby League Competition. This is an awesome achievement & we look forward to hearing how Lewis goes.

Changes to English and Mathematics K-2 Curriculum
Curriculum is at the core of quality teaching and learning. It is important to communicate with parents, carers and the community about the teaching and learning that is happening in your school. This engagement will assist schools in identifying strategic directions, decide on improvement measures and assess their progress which can lead to improved learning outcomes for students.
What is curriculum?
The curriculum is a plan for learning based on mandated and approved syllabus documents and current departmental policies and procedures.
The NSW curriculum refers to the suite of resources that are the syllabuses and the support resources to support teachers to implement the syllabuses. This includes, but is not limited to, resources including teaching and learning advice, assessment resources, and syllabus-specific materials including scope and sequences, units of work, standards materials and work samples.
What is curriculum reform?
The NSW Curriculum Reform aims to strengthen and streamline what is taught in schools. The curriculum reform is an opportunity to engage and re energise what we teach and how we teach it. It focuses on making clear what is essential in the curriculum to give more time for deep learning, establish stronger foundations in English and mathematics, and provide stronger links between HSC subjects and career pathways.
English and Mathematics
In 2023 new Syllabus documents in English and Mathematics are being implemented in schools in Kindergarten through to Year 2.
The new syllabuses emphasise key concepts, identify essential knowledge and skills, and include new outcomes to clearly show what is essential. They remove ambiguity for all users. Clear and concise language in the outcomes and content help you to understand the learning expectations for building foundational skills in English and Mathematics. The new Digital Curriculum means the syllabuses will be easier to access and navigate, so users can find information more efficiently. Access content points are provided to indicate content that students with significant intellectual disability may access. Teaching samples and examples are easy to find and use. Teaching advice is a supporting guide that was refined through engagement and consultation activities with teachers.
Staff Planning Days
Extended Leave (10 days or more)
For extended leave for holidays, parents are asked to complete an ‘Application for Exemption from Attendance at School’ form. This is available from the office.
