PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - MR STEVE THORNE
Newsletter Week 2
A Prayer for Silent Moments
Whispering God, who longs for us to hear your voice, and waits in the sheer silence for us to recognize your presence, meet me in this quiet moment. Silent my loud, tumultuous thoughts, and grant my brain rest. Help me let go of my distractions, and my desire to be distracted, to simply sit here with you. And, as the silence unsettles my spirit, let the waves of your peace and presence wash over me. Amen.
Reflection
Last Wednesday, we held our ANZAC Remembrance liturgy in the hall. This service included a one minute silence which for 5 - 12 year olds can be quite challenging, however they did it! I then reflected on the few days before where ANZAC dawn services and sporting codes, with tens of thousands of participants, all engaged in the silence.
Silence is a gift from God. When we take this time in our busy lives, it brings calmness and perspective. If one minute’s silence each year for our ANZACs can have a significant impact on our perspective in the world, imagine what could be achieved if we all took a couple of minutes to reflect on a regular basis.
Year 6 Camp
Year 6 left this morning for their 3 day camp in Fitzroy Falls. This is a fantastic experience for the students to be taken out of their comfort zone and test themselves in a number of challenging activities. Thank you to Mrs Devine, Mrs Miller and Mrs Townsend for giving of their time so generously.
Homework
Each year the topic of homework seems to pop up at some stage or another. Research backs the notion that regular set homework in Primary School has no lasting impact on student learning. However in saying that, for some children, homework establishes a routine that sets them up for the future. The dilemma in schools is that we cover the full spectrum of thinking in terms of homework - ranging from ‘there can never be enough’ down to ‘any homework is not worth the battle at home’.
At St Therese our policy has been that:
- K - Yr 2 = 10-15 minutes of reading (this would be a mixture of parent & child reading)
- Yrs 3 - 4 = 20 minutes predominantly reading but sometimes other activities as well
- Yrs 5 - 6 = 30 minutes predominantly reading but sometimes other activities as well
All students have online access to Soundwaves, Studyladder, Maths Online and SORA. Sometimes these sites are references for homework but they can be accessed for those students wishing to do more. We do have families who purchase commercially produced homework activity books - I would encourage this if your child is one who enjoys completing the activities.
Homework should never be a source of conflict for a family. Trying to establish routines and encouraging the completion of some activities is a good thing but if this is completed under duress, more harm than good may result longer term. Incomplete homework that is mandatory should be addressed by the class teacher with the student.

SPORT NEWS
Good Luck!!
On Friday, we will have three students representing our school and Diocese at the Mackillop Winter Trials in Canberra. Hunter P and Lewis McL will compete for a place in the Rugby League Team while Jessica McL will be aiming for selection in the Netball Team. Unfortunately, Hunter and Lewis will miss part of their Year 6 camp due to the clash of dates.
Congratulations!
Last Friday, Hunter P and Lewis McL trialled for the Diocesan Rugby Union Team in Campbelltown. Both boys were successful which will now take them to Forbes in country NSW towards the end of June. This is an awesome achievement (and a nice way to see the sites of our state!!).

Changes to English and Mathematics K-2 Curriculum
Curriculum is at the core of quality teaching and learning. It is important to communicate with parents, carers and the community about the teaching and learning that is happening in your school. This engagement will assist schools in identifying strategic directions, decide on improvement measures and assess their progress which can lead to improved learning outcomes for students.
What is curriculum?
The curriculum is a plan for learning based on mandated and approved syllabus documents and current departmental policies and procedures.
The NSW curriculum refers to the suite of resources that are the syllabuses and the support resources to support teachers to implement the syllabuses. This includes, but is not limited to, resources including teaching and learning advice, assessment resources, and syllabus-specific materials including scope and sequences, units of work, standards materials and work samples.
What is curriculum reform?
The NSW Curriculum Reform aims to strengthen and streamline what is taught in schools. The curriculum reform is an opportunity to engage and re energise what we teach and how we teach it. It focuses on making clear what is essential in the curriculum to give more time for deep learning, establish stronger foundations in English and mathematics, and provide stronger links between HSC subjects and career pathways.
English and Mathematics
In 2023 new Syllabus documents in English and Mathematics are being implemented in schools in Kindergarten through to Year 2.
The new syllabuses emphasise key concepts, identify essential knowledge and skills, and include new outcomes to clearly show what is essential. They remove ambiguity for all users. Clear and concise language in the outcomes and content help you to understand the learning expectations for building foundational skills in English and Mathematics. The new Digital Curriculum means the syllabuses will be easier to access and navigate, so users can find information more efficiently. Access content points are provided to indicate content that students with significant intellectual disability may access. Teaching samples and examples are easy to find and use. Teaching advice is a supporting guide that was refined through engagement and consultation activities with teachers.
Staff Planning Days
For extended leave for holidays, parents are asked to complete an ‘Application for Exemption from Attendance at School’ form. This is available from the office.
