PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - MR STEVE THORNE
Newsletter Week 8
Second Sunday of Advent
A Time to Repent
John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” Matthew 3:1–2
John the Baptist is truly the greatest of the prophets. He had the unique role of being the immediate precursor to the Savior of the World. Many pious traditions state that John was sanctified within the womb of his mother at the moment of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when our Blessed Mother who was pregnant with Jesus visited Elizabeth who was pregnant with John. Upon Mary’s greeting, John leaped in the womb for joy. Additionally, Jesus says that no one born of woman was greater than John. That’s an incredible statement and is reason enough for us to listen to the words of John.
Regarding the preaching of John, note first that John did his preaching in the desert of Judea. He did not sit on a royal throne or enjoy the honours of the Jewish leaders. Instead, he was poor, simple, prayerful, regularly engaged in penance, remained in the desert and invited many people to come to him. And when they came, he preached bold words to all.
Among those who came to John in the desert were the Pharisees and Sadducees. They did not come because they were sincere but because of their jealousy and envy. But when they came, John said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.” John then went on to preach that someone much mightier than he was coming after him and that he was not worthy to even untie His sandal straps. John explained that the one coming would become the source of salvation for many, but for others, they “…will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Though much more could be said about John the Baptist, it’s essential that we regularly consider his strong words of preaching and allow those words to shake us to the core.
My powerful Lord, You sent Saint John the Baptist before You, so as to prepare many hearts to receive You and Your transforming truth. Please humble me, dear Lord, so that I will listen to the words spoken by John and will indeed continually repent of all of my sin with all my heart. Jesus, I trust in You.

Bunnings BBQ Volunteers Needed
The P & F are againing hosting the Bunnings Wollongong BBQ (for the very last time) this Saturday, 3 December. To have the day run smoothly, we need at least 4 parents present at any one time. This is a great way to get to know other parents while at the same time raising funds that go back into improving resources for your child’s learning experience. If you can help support this initiative, please call Louise or Mary-Anne and let them know your availability.
Colour Run
This event will be held this Friday (please refer to the details sent on Monday). Parents are welcome to come and watch but even better would be for your children to see you involved. Volunteers are still needed to support the running. Please let Louise or Mary-Anne know if you are available.
Christmas Liturgy
Classes have started rehearsing for their part in our Christmas liturgy being held on Friday, 9 December at 11.30am. Weather permitting, the liturgy will be held on the back playground. Parents, grandparents are invited to join in this celebration.
Parking on the Front Playground
Now that the builder’s have temporarily left the site, parking will be available in the afternoon to pick-up children. Parents will need to walk up to the side gate near the office and collect children from the synthetic grass area. Ken Loughrey will close the gate to the church car park once it is full. Normal Kiss & Collect routines from the basketball court will remain the same.
Kiss & Collect
Reminder to all parents, grandparents and carers, the gates for Kiss & Collect will not open until 2.45pm. Please time your travel to school to arrive from that time. Any vehicles stopped on the road prior to this time are likely candidates to be fined. Police and Council Rangers have been notified.
Reports Portal & Classes for 2023
The reports portal on Compass will be opened on Wednesday, 14 December. This is also the day students will be introduced to their 2023 class teacher. Each student will have a note this day which will confirm their class for parents.
Keeping Our Students Safe in and around traffic during the Christmas holidays
With the Christmas holidays soon approaching, schools are encouraged to allocate lesson time to remind our students of passenger, pedestrian, and wheel safety. Our students will spend much of their time during the holiday period participating in road activities so it is important they know how to keep safe when out and about in traffic environments.
Catholic Schools New South Wales (CSNSW) have provided a Christmas holiday resource for primary students aimed at keeping them safe in and around roads during the Christmas and holiday period.
Part of this resource is a new animation available as part of the Safety Town resource, a suite of digital and non-digital teaching and learning activities designed to support quality teaching of road safety in NSW primary schools.
The animation can be viewed using this link

Our students will spend much of their time during the holiday period participating in road activities so it is important they know how to keep safe when out and about in traffic environments.
Understanding the incredibly busy times that schools and teachers face in the last few weeks of the year, CSNSW has created a PowerPoint presentation and worksheets about passenger, pedestrian, and safety on wheels for you to go through with your students.
The presentation and worksheets are available using this link - Christmas Road Safety 2022
Teachers should use their experience and knowledge about their students and the local environment to select information and activities that are most applicable to their class.
Student safety is paramount and it is hoped these resources will provide you with some key road safety messages to deliver in the lead-up to the holiday break
Congratulations Daisy M & Pippa K (both 5G)
The girls competed at the Australian National Cheerleading Championships over the weekend on the Gold Coast. Their team (NRG “Vortex”) placed 3rd in their division! There were 12,000 athletes competing from over 2,000 teams at the National Championships so this is a major achievement for both the girls and couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and dedication to their team! Awesome achievement girls!!
Learning Robotics
I've been learning about Robotics on Friday afternoons at the Wollongong TAFE. My team consisted of 4 girls. On September 10, our team 'Dobby Socks' competed in our very first competition. There were 33 teams competing from around NSW. We had to give a presentation in front of 3 judges about our innovation project which was investigating solar panels. We also had to present and explain our robots. We were the only all girl team in the competition. We were awarded the Rising All Stars Award. It was the first time a rookie team or an all girl team has won this award.
