Principal's Message - Mr Steve Thorne
Newsletter Week 9
A Moment for Grace
A Prayer for Refugees
God of our Wandering Ancestors,
Long have we known that your heart is with the refugee:
That you were born into time in a family of refugees
Fleeing violence in their homeland,
Who then gathered up their hungry child
And fled into alien country.
Their cry, your cry, resounds through the ages:
“Will you let me in?”
Give us hearts that break open
When our brothers and sisters turn to us with that same cry.
Then surely all these things will follow:
Ears will no longer turn deaf to their voices.
Eyes will see a moment for grace instead of a threat.
Tongues will not be silenced but will instead advocate.
And hands will reach out—working for peace in their homeland,
working for justice in the lands where they seek safe haven.
Lord, protect all refugees in their travels.
May they find a friend in me and so make me worthy
Of the refuge I have found in you.
AMEN
Staff Professional Development - Pupil Free Day
Date to remember: Monday, 18 July (Week 1)
Staff Spirituality Day - Pupil Free Day
Date to remember: Monday, 5 September (Week 8)
Teacher Strike Action - Thurs, 30 June
You would have seen this reported in the media over the past 24 hours. At this stage, I have no further updates as there has not been the time for communication with staff or the Catholic Education Office. Further details will be provided in the next few days.
OOSH Morning Closure
Parents who have used this service were notified last Friday of the decision to close. With additional promotion through the newsletter, numbers of students attending have not grown to a sustainable level, which would be a minimum of 5-6 students per day. During Term 4, I hope to promote this service again in the hope that it can be resurrected for 2023.
NRMA Road Safety Incursion
This Friday, all students will attend a Road Safety presentation sponsored by NRMA. This is a good opportunity for students to hear the road safety message from someone other than parents and teachers. Students will attend in Stage groups with each presentation lasting about a hour. as per the following timetable:
- 8.40am Stage 2 (Yrs 3 & 4)
- 9.40am Early Stage 1 (Kinder)
- 11.20am Stage 3 (Yrs 5 & 6)
- 1.30pm Stage 1 (Yrs 1 & 2)
Parents / carers are invited to come along for any of the sessions. Students are invited to bring along their bike helmets which will be discussed as part of the presentation.
Attendance
Government policy mandates that all students should be at school unless they are sick or on approved leave. On student reports, which will be released this afternoon, please take note of the number of days your child has been away. I acknowledge that some children have had illness and other valid reasons but at the same time there have been children absent for reasons such as:
- Birthdays - theirs or a family member’s
- A sibling is sick so child misses a day also
- Parents decided to take child shopping
Please be aware that a regular pattern of absence or late arrival does impact on student learning.
Extended Leave
Any planned leave that exceeds 10 days or more must be applied for by completing a form that is available from the office. If approved, parents will be issued with a Certificate of Extended Leave which justifies the child’s absence. Generally speaking, students will be asked to complete some form of learning activity during the absence which they can then share with their teacher and class on their return.
Reports & Learning Meetings - Students invited
Reports will be available via Compass from 3pm today. These, along with the Learning Meetings, should be a celebration of your child’s learning during Semester 1. Comparing reports is not fair on the children as they all have different strengths, weaknesses and they are at different points on their learning journey. Comments teachers make are aimed at supporting future progress and what is most important is that children feel good about themselves personally and as a learner.
We encourage students to become comfortable attending Learning Meetings as the discussion is around their learning. Certainly this should be happening, wherever possible, in the Primary grades.
End of Term Awards Assembly
This will be held next Friday, 1 July at 11.30am. Parents are invited to attend. A light morning tea will be provided from 11am. Parking will also be available on the basketball court.
Writing Competition - Refugee Week
Following is a speech written by Halle in Year 2 Blue for Refugee Week. Halle amazed the whole school by delivering her speech at this morning’s assembly. This shows great insight from a student so young. Well done Halle!!
NCCD
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on Students with Disability (NCCD).Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data onSchool Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to provide de-identified information, already available in the school, about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines.
WELL DONE ZAHRA CELEBI

Once again this year we will be participating in the Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools initiative.
The Wonder Recycling Rewards programme is a fun and easy program created to collect and recycle soft plastics and bread tags that might otherwise go to landfill, and earn rewards points to redeem on new sports equipment for our school.
Once collected they can be placed in the special collection box in the Library (Year 3 classrooms)
The campaign closes 9 September.
