Refugees and Asylum Seekers - A Catholic Perspective
Pope Francis frequently reminds us that migrants and refugees are not a problem to be solved or a burden to be shared equitably among countries, but sisters and brothers to be welcomed, respected, and loved. Their presence is not an imposition but presents us with the opportunity to contribute with them to building a better world.
In his Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2022 Pope Francis links human mobility and the building of the Kingdom of God, saying that “the ultimate meaning of our ‘journey’ in this world is the search for our true homeland, the Kingdom of God inaugurated by Jesus Christ, which will find its full realization
when he comes in glory”. He goes on to explain that God’s plan “gives priority to those living on the existential peripheries” including “migrants and refugees, displaced persons, and victims of trafficking” and that “the Kingdom of God is to be built with them, for without them it would not be the Kingdom that God wants.”
Migration is part of humanity’s journey, seeking to live ever more truly as one human family on our way to our true home.
Lord, make us bearers of hope,
so that where there is darkness,
your light may shine,
and where there is discouragement,
confidence in the future may be reborn.
Lord, make us instruments of your justice,
so that where there is exclusion, fraternity may flourish,
and where there is greed, a spirit of sharing may grow.
Lord, make us builders of your Kingdom,
together with migrants and refugees
and with all who dwell on the peripheries.
Lord, let us learn how beautiful it is
to live together as brothers and sisters.
Amen.
(Pope Francis, Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2022.)

Semester 1 Reports
These will be available to parents via Compass from 3pm next Wednesday, 22 June (Year 6 will be available from 3pm this Friday). Parents teacher interviews will follow in the days following. With your child, please praise the efforts they have made - this should be a celebration time. A reminder also that a ‘C’ grade indicates that your child is working at the expected level for their grade. If you have concerns regarding your child’s progress, please raise this during the parent teacher interview.
Building Update
New concrete stairs behind the canteen have been poured with the temporary stairs removed. This area remains blocked off as we wait for another concrete pour and handrails to be installed. The other significant change this week has been the installation of roofing over the life access on the top floor and the new toilet area at the back.
Volunteer(s) required to finish off grass cutting
A member of the parish has contacted me to say that he has a walk behind slasher that will make the cutting of grass on the last section on the Big Bank much easier. The parishioner is willing to drop off the slasher and demonstrate how it works to someone who may have a couple of hours to spare. The time on the weekend could be quite flexible. If you are able to assist, please contact Louise or Mary-Anne in the office with a preferred day and time.
Kiss & Collect Name Signs
While Mr Edwards is pretty good at recognising a high percentage of cars as they come down the hill onto the basketball court, it is still much easier if the family name is displayed. We ask that this stays visible until the children are in the car - this way teachers assisting children are also aware of who is next in line. If you need a new Family Name sign, please contact Louise or Mary-Anne.
Reminder also that if children need a hand with seatbelts, that parents move up to the presbytery to do this - this allows the line of traffic to keep moving steadily.
Pupil Free Day
Monday, 18 July will be a Pupil Free Day. During this day, teachers will be involved in completing two NESA Learning Modules focusing on the new Kinder to Year 2 English and Maths Syllabus Documents which become mandatory in 2023. While the focus is K-2, these documents will extend through to Year 10 in 2024.
Each year there are 5 designated days available to schools two of which were used at the beginning of the year. The last day of the year (Tuesday, 20 December) will be another Pupil Free Day where all staff renew their first aid training. The fifth day is a designated Spirituality Day for which we are still awaiting confirmation of a date by our presenter - it is likely to be during the second half of Term 3.
This year, an additional Pupil Free Day has been granted to all schools due to workload issues. Once again, a date is yet to be set but likely to be during the first half of Term 4.

WONDER RECYCLING REWARDS
Once again this year we will be participating in the Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools initiative.
The Wonder Recycling Rewards programme is a fun and easy program created to collect and recycle soft plastics and bread tags that might otherwise go to landfill, and earn rewards points to redeem on new sports equipment for our school.
Once collected they can be placed in the special collection box in the Library (Year 3 classrooms)
The campaign closes 9 September.
